RETRUD - 06

The conventional energy resources are rapidly being consumed in the developed countries, while many developing countries still lack reliable energy supply systems. Some Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) are mature, environmentally friendly and highly appropriate for such developing countries. RETs can play an important role in fulfilling the growing needs of the technologically advanced world of today.

Following the successful 1st International conference (RETRUD-98) and 2nd International conference (RETRUD-03), the 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energy Technology for Rural Development (RETRUD-08) is going to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 12-14 October 2008. Prior to the 3rd International conference a National Conference on the topic is also going to be organized which is expected to bring new dimensions in the country's renewable energy sector.

One day National Seminar on Prospects of liquid Bio-fuel in Nepal

After the energy crisis in the world, with the crude oil production peaking high, record high oil price, deteriorating political situation of the major countries exporting petroleum oil and emerging issue of energy security, the need of alternative fuel has been a major concern worldwide. An estimate shows 4% sustained shortfall in global oil supply would raise the price of oil above US $ 160 per barrel. Global peak oil, though some studies predict it will occur in 2037 or in 2012 or some experts think that it may take several years to occur, but the bottom line is it will definitely occur and its occurrence is imminent.

With the increased evidences of adverse climate change and negative impact on the global environment and human health, global community is facing one of the greatest threats to its existence. The continuous depletion of fossil fuel and the increasing demand of energy in the world have posed serious question whether the oil reserve will be able to fulfill the energy demand ever. The unsustainable energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere resulting rise in temperature (Global Warming) posed a serious challenge to the global community to mitigate this effect. Due to strict regulation on exhaust emission in several countries, it is felt the necessity of alternative fuel as a substitution of fossil fuel especially in transport sector. Liquid biofuel has several advantages such as the possibility to produce locally, environment friendly and less polluting fuel, capable to perform equivalent to petroleum fuel, non-requirement of additional maintenance and repair facilities, and even it can improve the vehicle performance. In this context, many developed and developing countries have already recognized liquid biofuel as a potential alternative fuel to the fossil fuel.

The development of liquid biofuel is taking place at a faster pace in the world and in our negighbouring countries like India and China. Though we have evidences of using these liquid biofuel in Nepal since ages, we are not yet able to either estimate its potential or identify the indigenous oil bearing plants in Nepal. If we are not able to take immediate step in this area, then we would be left far behind than our neighbouring countries. Thus, with an objective of bringing all stakeholders into a common agenda for the development and promotion of liquid biofuel in Nepal, one day national seminar has been conducted at CES/IOE/TU.

Technical Session

The seminar was jointly organised by Center for Energy Studies/IOE/TU and International Center for Integrated Mountain Development, Lalitpur on May 29, 2006 at CES Conference Hall, IOE, Lalitpur. There were six papers on subjects on international perspective on liquid biofuel development, estimation on oil yielding plants in Nepal, liquid biofuel prospects in Nepal, experiences on the applications of liquid biofuel in Nepal, economic feasibility of biofuel in Nepal and the concerns for biofuel markets. Following the paper presentations, after vigorous discussion among stakeholders and participants, a resolution has been developed to be passed on to the policy makers. Please find the copy of the Resolution for further discussion. Please send us your comments on the resolution by 4 June 2006 so that we can include it. Our e-mail for correspondence is ces@ioe.edu.np and please write "Resolution on biofuel" as your subject. Thank you!

Center for Energy Studies participated in Solid Waste Management Exhibition organised by Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City on the occasion of "Environment Day"

Center for Energy Studies participated in Solid Waste Management Exhibition organised by Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City on the occasion of "Environment Day". The exhibition was held from June 04, 2006 to June 05, 2006 at Jawalakhel.

CES had exhibited information on its state of art environment friendly Renewable Energy Technologies such as Building Integrated Photovoltaic Electric System (BIPVES), Earth Air Tunneling (EAT), Demonstration unit of Microhydro Power Plant (MHP). An energy efficient (reduced firewood consumption) Gasifier cook stove was also demonstrated. A huge crowd from different sectors was there taking interest on these technologies. The exhibition indeed was quite successful in disseminating information on environment friendly technologies and products.
