The Childhood of Internet

Internet Technical Evolution

“ This ARPA program has created no less than a revolution in computer technology and has been one of the most successful projects ever undertaken by ARPA. The full impact of the technical changes set in motion by this project may not be understood for many years. ”

- from ARPANET Completion Report, January 3, 1978

Arpanet often called the father of present time internet was initially devoted towards military research. The research project of DoD was really a grand success. During the life time of the ARPAnet a number of research projects were commenced which have proved the boon in the field of communication. The different works and the projects undertaken during that time not only introduced a new way of communication but also made it more technically robust and optimal.

Be it the concept of circuit switching and its replacement by packet switching or the introduction of layered protocol architectures like OSI and TCP/IP we can give the credit to the ARPAnet project. Also the modern communication applications and protocols like email, telnet, FTP or the documentation standards everything were started after the success of the initial ARPAnet project making the project a golden era in the history of interconnectivity. On the whole on looking back at the glorious history of ARPAnet a great amount of technical achievements can be mentioned. In this portion we discuss some of the remarkable achievements of ARPAnet.
